RISK MANAGEMENT

All facilities such as embassies, critical intrastructure, public sites and many other facilities face a certain level of risk associated with various threats. These threats may be the result of natural events, accidents or intentional acts to cause damage. Regardless of the nature of these threat, the facility owner has the responsibility to evaluate and manage the risk associated with the facility. The risk management process always follows the same pattern - threat assessment, vulnerability assessment, risk analysis and recommendations to reduce the risk. Recommendations would either be measures to reduce the facility vulnerability or measures to increase the facility robustness or both.

THREAT ASSESSMENT

The first step in a risk management process is a threat assessment. A threat assessment considers the complete spectrum of threats associated with the facility. The standard threats cover conventional or suicide attacks from vehicles, drones, kinetic energy weapons, high explosives, explosively formed penetrators, rockets or grenades.

VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT

When all possible threats has been evaluated in the threat assessment the vulnerability assessment is performed. 

RISK ANALYSIS

A combination of the impact of loss rating and the vulnerability rating can be used to evaluate the potential risk to the facility from a given threat.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO REDUCE RISK

Based on the findings in the risk analysis the last step is to list recommendations to reduce the risk. Recommendations would either be measures to reduce the facility vulnerability or measures to increase the facility robustness or both.
